Briefing For The Heads Of Mission In Malaysia On The Updates Of Malaysia’s Security Situation

1.The objective of this briefing is to provide the current updates on the security situation in Malaysia to all heads of foreign missions in Malaysia.
 
2.The briefing will provide an overview on the Malaysian domestic security scenario with emphasis on three main issues i.e. terrorism threat, firearms-related crimes and the current security environment in Sabah. The session will be  moderated by YB Datuk Nur Jazlan Bin Mohamed, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and to be presented by:
 
(i)DCP Dato’ Law Hong Soon, 
Deputy Director of CID (Investigation/Legal)
(ii)SAC Dato’ Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay 
Principal Assistant Director (Counter Terrorism)
 
3.The Malaysian government takes serious view of the reports on security issues highlighted by the media and is committed to ensure that the country remains continuously in a safe and secured condition. The actual situation in Malaysia was not accurately reported in some media reports especially among the social media.
 
4.The Government of Malaysia is steadfast in providing accurate information to all foreign missions regarding the state of security in this country. Any party whomsoever are welcome to clarify information they received from the various sources.
 
5.Malaysia has adequate legal provisions to address security threats including terrorism, firearms-related crimes notwithstanding the security threat in the East Coast of Sabah.
 
The provisions are :
i)Penal code 
ii)Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA)
iii)The Prevention of Crime Act 2014 (POCA)
iv)The Prevention of Terrorism Act 2014 (POTA)
v)Special Measures against Terrorism in Foreign Countries Act 2015 (SMATA)
vi)Arms Act 1960
vii)Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971
 
6.Since 2013, a total of 230 suspects have been detained under the provisions of  SOSMA, POCA and POTA comprising 200 locals and 30 foreigners. 
 
7.Ninety Malaysians have been identified to be involved in Daesh’s activity in Syria in which 21 have been killed, including 7 as suicide bombers. To date, 8 Malaysians have returned after spending their time in Syria.
