MEDIA STATEMENT
INCONJUNCTION WITH
THE 4TH ASEAN WORKSHOP ON EFFECTIVE CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESPONSES TO TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS: SUPPORT TO VICTIMS OF TRAFFICKING IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the following statement:

┬À┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬áThe 4th┬áASEAN Workshop on Effective Criminal Justice Responses to Trafficking in Persons: Support to Victims of Trafficking in Criminal Justice Systems was graced by the Home Minister, YB DatoÔÇÖ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the Park Royal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

┬À┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬áThe Workshop is┬áa collaboration between Council for the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (MAPO), Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) with the Australia-Asia Program to Combat Trafficking in Persons (AAPTIP)┬áand is┬ásupported by the ASEAN Secretariat;

┬À┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬áWelcomes the presence of H.E. Leila M. De Lima, Secretary, Department of Justice, Republic of the Philippines, H.E. Dr. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons (especially women and children) and H.E. Rod Smith, High Commissioner of Australia;

┬À┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬áParticipants from ASEAN Member States encompassing┬ápolicy, legal and enforcement personnel┬áthat deal with the issue of trafficking in persons are involved in the workshop. It is aimed┬áto promote the safe and successful involvement of victims in the criminal justice response to trafficking in persons throughout the ASEAN region;

┬À┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬áThe Workshop is expected to seek consensus on┬ákey issues related to victims participation┬áin the criminal justice process including recommendations to take this issue forward at both national and regional levels;

┬À┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬áMalaysia continues to work closely with strategic partners includinginternational organisations to accomplish the desired target┬áto end impunity for perpetrators and to accord better protection to victims of this heinous crime. ┬áIn this regard, Malaysia had co-hosted with International Organisation for Migration (IOM) a specific workshop on victim protection in Kuala Lumpur in 2012.

┬À┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬á┬áMalaysia would strive to┬áwork towards the elimination of this crime┬áin this region and would need to have the full cooperation and support of other ASEAN Member Countries due to the severity of this issue which is complex, multi-faceted and cross border in nature. ┬áThis could be realised with the early conclusion of two important ASEAN documents namely ASEAN Convention on Trafficking in Persons (ACTIP) and Regional Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons (RPA).
